The barrel roll returns!
Finally. FINALLY! Nintendo surprised everyone with a Nintendo Direct today. That Nintendo Direct revealed the game I’ve been wanting them to release for years. If you know me, you know what this game is. The heavily rumored new Star Fox game is real, and it is coming in the very near future.
As seen in the Star Fox Nintendo Direct below, the next Star Fox game is simply called Star Fox. Shigeru Miyamoto kicked off the presentation by showing a clip from the recently released The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, introducing the leader of the Star Fox crew himself, Fox McCloud. Miyamoto then gave Yoshiaki Koizumi the floor to formally reveal the next entry in the beloved sci-fi Nintendo franchise.
Koizumi confirmed that Star Fox is a remake of the Nintendo 64 classic, Star Fox 64. However, as seen in the footage, the upcoming on-rails shooter gets a visual overhaul, which includes the controversial redesign of the characters. It also features cutscenes that help flesh out the story of the Star Fox crew and their fight against Andross.
The Nintendo Direct is pretty funny if you have ever played Star Fox 64, because half the presentation is spent explaining an N64 game that is nearing its 30-year anniversary. Some new features to Star Fox sets itself apart from the original, including its revamped online multiplayer mode, mouse controls, and character avatars (which is both disturbing and hilarious).
Luckily for fans, they won’t have to wait too long. Star Fox releases exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25. It is available to pre-order right now digitally for $49.99 or physically for $59.99.
My personal take, I’m very excited for Star Fox. When the Nintendo Switch 2 was revealed, I told my group of friends that I would not buy the console until a new Star Fox was announced. Well, it got announced, so I will soon be giving Nintendo my money. Am I a bit disappointed by the character designs? Yeah, a little bit. Do I wish this were a brand-new entry, and not just another remake of Star Fox 64, which was a remake of Star Fox for the SNES? Yes. But like I said, I’ve been waiting years for something Star Fox-related to be released. I’m happy it’s finally happening.
